The search for new propulsion methods for automobiles sparks intense debate across all levels driven by concerns over global warming, pollutant emissions, and the urgent need to sustainably safeguard the automotive industry from newly industrializing countries.
The ongoing transformations in the automotive ecosystem require the support and guidance of institutions, especially the central government, to capitalize on opportunities for the entire Italian production chain.
Specifically, the role of the automobile as a mobility element is currently being renegotiated. This primarily involves public decisions in terms of regulation, incentives, and taxation, with inevitable consequences for the development models of companies in the automotive supply chain and for those regions highly specialized in these activities. In countries with a significant automotive tradition, industrial policy interventions at the national and regional levels have been significant and varied, including direct state involvement in the share capital of final assemblers and suppliers, as seen in France and Germany.
Defending Italian production in both final assembly and supply means safeguarding a strategic industrial sector, a considerable portion of GDP, and the employment of nearly one million workers.
