International experiences during the studies are an element that is gaining higher importance in the study of the training paths of PhDs, but the analysis of their impact is limited by the lack of systematic data. International experiences during doctoral studies do not have standardized forms between countries, they vary in duration and content and are often regulated by agreements between universities if not directly between departments.
In the Fourth Report on Research and Innovation of the DSU-CNR we used the data from the MORE project – Mobility Survey of the Higher Education Sector to present an analysis of the impact of the international experience of PhDs on the timing and modes of access to academia, comparing the Italian situation with that of the main European countries.
A composite scenario emerges from our analysis, in which international experience delays entry into research but at the same time increases the chances of PhDs having an academic job, and this result is valid both for Italy and for other European countries. In this context, men and doctors in the field of Natural Sciences seem to be advantaged. The results suggest the need to intervene to better structure the international experience during the doctorate and give all doctoral students the opportunity to benefit from it.
