Maurizio Lazzari

Bio

Graduated with honors in 1993 in Geological Sciences, at the University of Naples Federico II. PhD in Earth Sciences in 1999 at the University of Bari. Senior Researcher, geologist, geoarchaeologist at the Institute of Cultural Heritage Sciences.

His research activities have been focused in 30 years of career on natural and anthropic hazards and risk factors, aimed at the protection and conservation of settlements and the historical-monumental heritage of the Mediterranean area, with particular attention to geomorphological processes, geological and geomorphological cartography, soil erosion, conservation of historical and archaeological sites, geoarchaeology and pedology, ancient roads, historical rural hydraulic structures, enhancement of degraded areas, geotourism, cultural landscape and UNESCO Heritage.

Qualified for university teaching of II level in the sector of Applied Geology, Physical Geography and Geomorphology since 2013.

Contract professor of Geoarchaeology and Pedology at the School of Specialization in Archaeological Heritage of Lecce since 2019.

He taught at the University of Basilicata: Pedology from 2019 to 2023 in the three-year degree course in Forestry and Environmental Sciences; Paleontology and Paleoecology from 2007 to 2012 and Physical Geography and Geomorphology from 2006 to 2008 in the three-year degree course for Cultural Heritage Operators.

Member of the Teaching Board of the Doctorate in Agricultural, Forestry and Food Sciences and Technologies of the Department of Agricultural, Forestry, Food and Environmental Sciences (DAFE) of the University of Basilicata, from the XXXI to the XLI cycle.

Member of the Council of the School of Specialization in Archaeological Heritage D. Adamesteanu of the University of Salento in Lecce since April 2020.

From 2004 to 2025, he was responsible and scientific coordinator of numerous funded national research projects, concerning landslides and triggering factors, natural and anthropic risks, geological and geomorphological mapping and cartography, the protection of historical and archaeological sites in Southern Italy and the Mediterranean, the enhancement of degraded areas and geotourism use, landscape protection and cultural landscape.

He has held various institutional roles, such as member of the Institute Council, ISPC contact person for the coordination of activities within the Faro Italia Network and the related relations with the Venice Office of the Council of Europe, representative of the CNR in the Strategic Steering Committee of the Framework Agreement between the CNR and the European University Centre for Cultural Heritage of Ravello and various other positions representing the CNR.

He is the author of 180 scientific products in journals, conference proceedings, monographs and miscellanies. He is a reviewer of about 50 international journals, a member of scientific Editorial Boards and Book Series Editor since 2024 of the Earth Science Series, published by the publishing house IntechOpen Limited, Great Portland Street, London.
