Graduated in 1987 in Economics and Commerce from the University of Rome “La Sapienza”, after some experiences at other public bodies, in 1988 he was hired by the National Research Council.

Initially he dealt with financial planning, budgeting and accounting, gaining various experiences in the field of accounting systems and contributing to their evolution within the CNR.

Between 2010 and 2014 he was Director of the Budget and Financial Planning Office of the CNR and over the years he also gained experience in the fields of operational planning and internal control systems, also becoming responsible for the Management Control and Internal Audit units.

Giulia Antonini is a Technologist at the Department of Human and Social Sciences, Cultural Heritage of the National Research Council of Italy.

Having graduated in Classical Literature from Sapienza University of Rome, she pursued a master’s degree in Book and Multimedia Publishing at the University of Turin. In 2018, she earned her PhD in Communication, Research, and Innovation from Sapienza University of Rome.

She is part of the Department’s Technical-Scientific Secretariat, where she is responsible for planning, monitoring, coordinating, and promoting research in the DSU’s areas of interest.

As head of the Department’s publishing activities, she coordinates the editorial series and publications promoted by the DSU.

Daniele Bruschi is a III Level TD Technologist at the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences (DSU) of the National Research Council.

Graduated in Economic and Social Sciences with a grade of 110/110 from Sapienza University of Rome, in 2015, he obtained a Doctorate in “Energy and environment: innovation and sustainability” from the same university.

He is an expert in scouting funding opportunities for research and innovation, planning, management and reporting of national and international funding. He held the role of Project and Financial Manager in various national and European projects. He is also a teacher of EU funding, project management and fund raising in various university masters’ programs.

At DSU Department he deals with supporting the implementation of the Work Package 2 activities ‘Governance & Sustainability’ of the PNRR project “Fostering Open Science in Social Science Research – FOSSR” in which the Department is directly involved as a partner.

Finally, it carries out support activities in the preparation and management of research projects, both national and international level, in which the Department participates.

Giovanni Canitano began his career in 1995 as a researcher at the CNR Institute of Wood Technology in San Michele all’Adige (TN), focusing on structural and economic analyses of the wood and furniture industry in Italy. Subsequently, he conducted studies on characterizing and implementing wood quality to enhance the use of raw materials, ensure sustainable land management, and generate environmental and socio-economic benefits.

Currently, he is involved in database management for socio-economic statistics and oversees the updating and implementation of the Mediterranean Economies database. He heads the Mediterranean Digital Humanities Lab (MDHLab), an interdisciplinary research infrastructure of the National Research Council (CNR). The primary goal of MDHLab is to further develop projects undertaken by the Institute for Mediterranean Studies (CNR – ISMed) and its numerous scientific partners.

Giovanni conducts various research studies, focusing on topics such as water and food security in Mediterranean countries, ecological and digital transitions, sustainability, circular economy, peace, scientific diplomacy, and one health. He is a founding member of Club Limes Napoli, a member of the Steering Committee, and serves on the scientific committee of the Geopolitics Meetings organized by the Club.

As the Referent of the ISMed Technical and Scientific Secretariat, he also holds positions as Network Administrator, Webmaster, and Head of the institute’s library. He has been a member of the ISMed Institute Council since December 2019. Since 2023, he has been collaborating with the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, Cultural Heritage of the CNR, in managing and supporting research activities in the humanities and social sciences and their valorization.

Salvatore Capasso obtained a PhD in Economics and Finance from the University of Manchester (UK) and a Doctorate in Economic Sciences from the University of Naples Parthenope. Since 2012 he has been full professor of Economic Policy at the University of Naples Parthenope and from 2015 to 2019 he was Director of the Institute of Studies on Mediterranean Societies CNR which, following his restructuring project, merged into the current Institute of Studies on the Mediterranean CNR (ISMed). He has then directed ISMed from 2020 to 2023. Since April 2023 he has been Director of the Department of Human and Social Sciences, Cultural Heritage of the CNR.

He has numerous scientific publications to his credit, is on the board of several scientific journals and has assumed the scientific responsibility and coordination of numerous national and international research projects.

His research interests focus on topics of Development Economics and Economic Growth and on topics of Monetary and Financial Economics. In particular, in recent years he has worked on the relationship between the underground economy and financial development and the relationship between corruption and economic growth.

He has been a “visiting professor” at numerous universities, including the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee (USA), the University of Santiago de Compostela (Spain) and the University of Manchester (UK) and is a member of several Scientific Councils of national and international institutions.

Daniela de Gregorio has been involved in design activities for research and training since 1996, funded by European and national research grants.

Since 2023, she holds the position of Senior Technologist at CNR and serves as a Grant Manager.

Stefano Gallo deals with the social history of contemporary Italy, with experience in researching archival sources and documents ranging from the end of the 19th century to the 1980s. He has more than 100 research products to his credit, including books, articles, essays and reviews, and 50 participations in and organization of scientific conferences and seminars.

His main fields of research are the history of migration and the history of work. He teaches “History of migration in the contemporary age” at the Department of Civilization and Forms of Knowledge of the University of Pisa (specialist degree course in Contemporary History). His latest books are entitled “History of work in contemporary Italy” (il Mulino 2023, with Fabrizio Loreto) and “Primo Maggio” (il Mulino 2025).

He helped found the Italian Society of the History of Work, of which he was the first coordinating secretary until 2015 (storialavoro.it). Since 2021 he has been scientific director of the Franco Serantini Library – Historical Institute of the Resistance of the province of Pisa. He is also a member of the doctoral board of the Research Doctorate in Social and Political Change, an international and interdisciplinary Doctorate of excellence of the Universities of Turin and Florence.

Antonella Guidi, a degree in Russian Language and Literature at Sapienza University of Rome and a MA in Marketing Exhibition, she gained experience in the field of communication as a press officer in various sectors both in Italy and abroad. After working for a long time in Ukraine and Russia in the third sector (international civil service in orphanages in Ukraine and international adoptions in Russia), she returned to Italy dealing with International Relations at the CNR in Rome, elaborating and editing bilateral agreements for scientific and technological cooperation between CNR and former USSR Countries and Balkans. At the DSU she supports communication and the organization of events, and she manages the third mission of the DSU and fundraising.

Tommaso Ismaelli is Research Director at the Institute of Cultural Heritage Sciences, in Florence.

Classical archaeologist, specialized in archeology and architecture of the Greco-Roman world. His research interests are aimed at public construction in the eastern Mediterranean and ancient Italy, through paths that go from surveying to the digital reconstruction of monuments. Insights concern the socio-economic dynamics of construction sites, the artistic culture and the technological knowledge of the social actors of construction. With innovative and multidisciplinary approaches, his research also concerns the archaeometry of building materials, the culture of architectural restoration in the ancient world, ritual practices and religious phenomena from Asia Minor to Sicily. He directs research on the architecture of republican and imperial Rome with the Basilica Iulia Project at the Roman Forum (since 2015) in collaboration with the Archaeological Park of the Colosseum and Sapienza University of Rome, and on Hellenism in southern Italy, with research on the Athenaion of Casto (Lecce, since 2009), in collaboration with the University of Salento and the SABAP Lecce-Brindisi Superintendency. Much of his research is aimed at the Hellenistic, imperial and late ancient architecture of Turkey, with research in Hierapolis of Phrygia (as part of the Italian Archaeological Mission) aimed at studying the main monuments of the city, and, more recently in Teos (in collaboration with Ankara University) for the reconstruction of the Temple of Dionysus. Since 2018, in Tripolis ad Maeandum (in collaboration with the University of Pamukkale – Denizli) he has coordinated the knowledge, study and anastylosis project of the Monumental Nymphaeum, with MAECI recognition.

He is a contract professor of Archeology of the Roman Provinces at the University of Florence (SAGAS Department) and of Archeology of Magna Graecia at the School of Specialization in Archaeological Heritage of the same University, he taught Classical Archeology at the ICR School of Higher Education ( Matera), is a member of the teaching board of the PASAP Doctorate – Archaeological, historical, architectural and landscape heritage of the University of Bari and of the Doctorate in Conservation of Architectural Heritage of the Polytechnic of Milan. He is the author of various monographs, editor of miscellaneous volumes and co-director of the journal “Asia Minor-An International Journal of Archeology in Turkey” (ANVUR-A).

Andrea Giovanni Nuzzolese is Senior Researcher at the Institute of Sciences and Technologies of Cognition (ISTC) of the CNR where he is co-head of the Laboratory of Semantic Technologies. He obtained his PhD in Computer Science in 2014 at the University of Bologna studying methodologies and software architectures for the extraction of Knowledge Patterns from the Web. His research interests include ontology design, linked data, the Semantic Web, knowledge extraction from heterogeneous formats, natural language understanding, and social and assistive robotics mediated by knowledge graphs. He participated as a researcher in the “Interactive Knowledge Stack” (IKS) project (IP EU FP7) and MARIO (EU H2020). He is currently scientific director for CNR-ISTC of the Water Health Open knoWledge project (WHOW – 2019-EU-IA-0089 EU CEF Telecom – Public Open Data) aimed at designing and implementing a framework to encourage the creation of a vast ecosystem of data on consumption and quality of water, health parameters and the spread of diseases. He is lead researcher for CNR-ISTC in the Hybrid Human Artificial Collective Intelligence in Open-Ended Domains project (HACID – 101070588 HORIZON-CL4-2021-DIGITAL-EMERGING-01-10) aimed at developing a new hybrid collective intelligence system (natural- artificial) for decision-making support for professionals facing complex and open-ended problems, promoting commitment, fairness and trust. He is also responsible for research units and member of the executive board of the Fostering Open Science in Social Science Research project (FOSSR – MUR PNRR IR IR0000008) which aims to become the Italian Open Science Cloud in which to integrate the innovative services developed by the project for data collection, their management and the analysis of data on economic and social change, according to the principle of equity. He was principal investigator of the project “Measuring the Impact of Research: Alternative Indicators” (MIRA) funded by the National Agency for Evaluation of the University and Research System (ANVUR) within the theme “Research evaluation methods” of the program “ Research Ideas”. He was scientific manager for ISTC-CNR of the collaboration agreement with the Digital Innovation Team of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers aimed at designing and implementing the Italian Public Administration ontology network known as OntoPiA.

He has published more than 80 scientific works on ontology design, linked data, knowledge extraction, machine reading and sentiment analysis in international journals, conferences and workshops. He is a member of program committees of conferences and workshops on semantic web and ontology engineering. Furthermore, he is an area editor of the Journal of Web Semantics and serves as a reviewer for numerous international scientific journals in the domain of artificial intelligence and knowledge representation. He is co-founder of BUP Srl, an innovative start-up dedicated to the design and implementation of solutions for the creation and management of knowledge graphs.

Performs management and coordination activities for the design phases, processing of particularly complex technological and/or professional activities for the protection, conservation, and enhancement of cultural heritage, through the use of innovative IoT (Internet of Things) technologies and integrated security systems in the context of managing and coordinating accessibility and safety (safety&security), both under normal conditions and in emergency situations of cultural sites.

He was responsible for the CNR’s Accessibility Working Group and represented the CNR in the Working Group of the D.G. Museums of the Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities and for Tourism (MiBACT – today MiC) for the drafting of the Guidelines for overcoming architectural, cultural, sensory-perceptual, and cognitive barriers in places of cultural interest.

From 2016 to 2020, he was the CNR responsible for the Pilot Project jointly promoted by MiBACT and CNR called Smart@Pompei, aimed at developing a replicable integrated technological demonstrator also in other contexts to manage the safety of people and monuments, both under normal and emergency conditions.

From April 2012 to October 2017, he worked at the CNR’s Department of Engineering, ICT and Technologies for Energy and Transport (DIITET), particularly dealing with the management and coordination of the design and processing of particularly complex technological and/or professional activities of the department in the following thematic areas: safety, smart cities and communities, cultural heritage, aerospace, aeronautics, and air transport.

Beginning in October 2023, I have been working with DSU-CNR, aiding the Director’s Secretariat and engaging in procurement processes.

At the CNR-ISPC’s Lecce Branch, I assumed the role of Me.Pa. Instructor, responsible for overseeing direct orders and negotiations. In my capacity as the Assistant Secretary of the CNR-ISPC’s Director’s Secretariat, I have been managing the office’s day-to-day operations. Additionally, I was the procurement liaison for the ISPC Naples Site until 2023 and provided support to the RUP for the ISPC Sesto Fiorentino Site until 2022.

At CNR-IBAM, from 2011 to 2019, I supported the RUP in purchasing activities and managed the directorate’s secretariat, electronic protocol, and Certified Electronic Mail (P.E.C.). I also contributed to the Sciences for DIPLOMAcy project, overseeing the Certified Electronic Mail reception service and electronic protocol for selections. As part of the DICeT-INMOTO project under PON 2007-2013, I was involved in administrative and management tasks and also contributed to the “Culture and Tourism Cluster: Dicet-Inmoto – Orchestra” project. Massimiliano Saccone holds the position of Senior Technologist at the Department of Human and Social Sciences, Cultural Heritage (DSU) of the National Research Council (CNR) in Italy.

He graduated in Humanities, specializing in Modern and Contemporary History, from Sapienza University of Rome in 2007 and later earned a postgraduate diploma in Archival and Library Heritage (Librarian track) from the Sapienza’s School of Specialization in Archival and Library Heritage.

At the Department, Massimiliano is responsible for a range of organizational, managerial, and technical-scientific activities related to planning, programming, monitoring, evaluation, coordination, and promotion of research. He also coordinates the Department’s activities in Research Infrastructures within the Social and Cultural Innovation (SSH) sector and contributes to the implementation of DSU initiatives for Open Science.

Adriana Valente, jurist and sociologist, is a research director of the CNR-IRPPS, in the research group Social Studies on Science, Education, Communication (COMESE), whose main aim is the understanding and valorisation of the relationships between science, politics and society. Her research interests include: relationship between evidence and decision-making processes; education, science teaching and participation in scientific debate; science communication and the scientific community; representations of international migration and representations of migrants in textbooks and the media.
