Giovanni Carlo Bruno

Europe Day is celebrated on May 9th, commemorating the date in 1950 when Robert Schuman presented the economic cooperation plan, conceived by Jean Monnet and outlined in the “Schuman Declaration,” which marked the beginning of the European integration process with the goal of a future federal union.

On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of this event, we interviewed Giovanni Carlo Bruno, researcher in international law and European Union law at the National Research Council – Institute for Research on Innovation and Services for Development (CNR-IRISS). We asked him where we stand today regarding Schuman’s great dream, what goals Europe has achieved so far, and what critical issues and challenges it still faces.

Giovanni Carlo Bruno has a degree in Political Science. His research focuses primarily on the domestic and international legal protection of vulnerable groups, including people with migration backgrounds. He previously served as a Seconded National Expert – Legal and Human Rights Advisor for the European External Action Service (2012-2014), was a key staff member of ‘EULab – Summer School on Labour Migration in the European Union’, and Co-Convener of the ‘International Law of Culture’ interest group of the European Society of International Law. Since 2021, he has been the Book Review Editor of the Italian Review of International and Comparative Law.
